The MS Word Refiner refines the scribing of a file by mapping Word’s built-in styles to the ScML (Scribe Markup Language) equivalents.
Mapping
When using the MS Word Refiner, the Digital Hub will
- replace character rendering (including italic, bold, etc.) with the corresponding ScML character style (i, b, etc.);
- change the character styles “Footnote Reference” and “Endnote Reference” to fnref and enref in body matter and fnnum and ennum in notes;
- change the “Footnote Text” and “Endnote Text” styles to fn and en;
- change the character style “Hyperlink” to url;
- change any paragraphs that use Word’s automatic numbering or bullets to the corresponding ScML list style (nl, ul) and change Word’s automatic numbering and bullets to literal characters (but it will not differentiate between bulleted lists and unnumbered lists without bullets);
- change any non-ScML paragraphs within tables to td;
- change any remaining non-ScML style paragraphs to p; and
- delete any empty paragraphs.
Optional Settings
When Articulate Spacing Distinctions for MS Word is enabled (the default setting), the Digital Hub will apply the scribing distinctions necessary to achieve proper spacing in a typeset book or an e-book. See the Articulation resource page for more information on how these distinctions are applied.
When Convert Notes is enabled, the Digital Hub will remove footnotes and endnotes embedded in a Word document from the notes window and will place them at the end of the resulting file.
Additional settings can be enabled to Place Footnotes at Section Breaks and Place Endnotes at Section Breaks instead of at the end of the document.
See Conversion Settings for more details.
